Albertha Wood Hayes

Mrs. Albertha Wood Hayes, 90, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest on Sunday, December 9, 2018 at Chase City Health and Rehabilitation Center. Mrs. Hayes was born in Mecklenburg County, VA on October 28, 1928 to the late Ned Dyke and Mary Watkins Wood. She attended Concord Elementary School, and was a graduate of the historic Thyne Institute in Chase City, VA. At an early age, she joined Concord Baptist Church in Chase City, VA where she served as an adult Sunday School Teacher, member of the Senior Choir, Missionary Circle Secretary, Church Treasurer and Trustee. She was a former employee of Lake Sleepwear. Mrs. Hayes later attended the Evan-Smith Leadership Training Institute, sponsored by Virginia Union University, graduating on May 17, 2008. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James A. Hayes; four children, Lorina H. Baskerville, Nelson L., Lanza and Eugene A. Hayes, three grandchildren, three brothers and two sisters. Cherishing her memories are seven children, Carolyn H. Liggon, Stanley O. Hayes (Taffy), Henry D. Hayes (Janie), Donald M. Hayes (Joyce), Coretta H. Atkins (Darnell), Sharon H. Bouldin and Velma H. Crowder (Warren), 18 grandchildren, a host of great-grandchildren; one brother, William E. Wood; one sister-in-law, one brother-in-law, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Albertha Wood Hayes will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 15, 2018 at Concord Baptist Church, Chase City, VA with Rev. Raleigh M. Bagley, III officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing will be held on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until 7:00 P.M. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
