James Henly Saunders, Sr.

Mr. James Henly Saunders, Sr. 93, of South Hill, VA entered eternal rest Monday, January 13, 2020 at his residence. Mr. Saunders was born in Chase City, VA May 26, 1926 to the late Matthew and Serina Saunders. He was a graduate of the historic Thyne Institute, and at an early age joined Greater Union Baptist Church. Mr. Saunders was a veteran of the US Army serving in WWII. He married Esther Walker in 1949, they relocated to East Orange, NJ. While living in New Jersey, he joined Peaceful Zion Baptist Church. He also gained employment at Schering Plough Pharmaceuticals where he was employed for 33 years, retiring in 1991. Upon returning back to Virginia he joined Silone Baptist Church. In addition to his parents, Mr. Saunders was preceded in death by his wife, Esther Walker Saunders; a son, baby boy Saunders (who died at birth), and one sister, Ester Mance. Left to cherish his precious memories are a daughter, Sylvia Ann of South Hill, VA; two sons, James, Jr. (Donna) of Easton, PA and David-Scott (Jeff) of Jersey City, NJ; three sisters-in-law, Amy W. Butler of Richmond, VA, Ida Walker of Baltimore, MD and Mary W. Wright of Fort Washington, MD, and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mr. James Henly Saunders, Sr. will be conducted 11:00 AM Monday, January 20, 2020 at Silone Baptist Church, Chase City, VA with Rev. Melvin J. Palmer delivering the eulogy. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Chase City, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Sunday from 12:00 Noon until 6:00 P.M., with the family receiving friends from 2:00 to 4:00 P.M. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
