Lorane H. Press

Mrs. Lorane H. Press, 95, of Chase City, VA entered eternal rest Sunday, January 09, 2011 at Community Memorial Healthcenter, South Hill, VA. Mrs. Press was born August 25, 1915, in Philadelphia, PA to the late Daisey Goode Henson Doggette and Joseph Henson. In 1934, Mrs. Press graduated from Thyne Institute. She then attended St. Paul’s Normal and Industrial Institute and graduated with a two-year degree in 1936. She returned to St. Paul’s College several years later and earned a bachelor’s degree in Education. After returning to Chase City, Mrs. Press married Eugene K. Press on February 28, 1940. She began teaching with various schools in Mecklenburg County where she worked for 45 years. In addition to her work as an educator, Mrs. Press has tirelessly contributed to her community. A member of Bethlehem Baptist Church for more than 50 years, she worked in leading the Baptist Young People’s Training Union, Missionary Circle, and former Chairperson of the Floral Committee. She has also served as secretary of the Bluestone Convention and Association, a former member of the Business and Professional Club of Mecklenburg County, and served as the Grand Marshall of the 2009 Chase City Christmas Parade. Cherishing her memories are her cousins, Katherine Smith of Norfolk, VA and Michael Smith (Robin) of Chesterfield, VA; two sisters-in-law, Connie Fox and Dorothy Press both of the Eastern Shore and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends. Funeral services for Mrs. Lorane H. Press will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Thursday, January 13, 2011 at Bethlehem Baptist Church, Chase City, with Rev. Dr. Ricky A. Lee, officiating. Burial will follow in Thyne Memorial Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6 until 7 P.M. at the funeral home. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
