Drewry Thomas Bacon

Mr. Drewry Thomas Bacon entered eternal rest on Sunday, December 1, 2019 at the Chase City Rehabilitation Center, Chase City, Virginia. Mr. Bacon was born on September 22, 1930 in Charlotte County to the late Drewry and Louise Bacon. He was the oldest of ten children. Two brothers, Joe and JD, and one nephew, Billy Wayne, preceded him in death. After his father’s death, Drewry relocated to Chase City from Baltimore, Maryland to assume the role as head of the family. Upon his return to the area, Drewry immediately developed plans to build his mother a house. He, along with two of his brothers and cousins, were able to build a home for his mother and other siblings. At an early age, Drewry joined the First Baptist Church of Wylliesburg, Virginia. As a member, he served on the choir, as a deacon, treasurer and Superintendent of the Sunday School. He loved his church family and tried always to do God’s will with whatever challenges he faced. Drewry received his formal education at Thyne Institute, Chase City, Virginia prior to marrying the love of his life, Anna Lee, in 1949. To this union, they were blessed with seven children. Three of the seven children preceded him in death, Thomas Lee Jr., Conrey, and Tyree. Drewry worked many jobs during his lifetime to support his family. He introduced entrepreneurship to his family. He worked in construction, worked on a part-time basis for the Town of Chase City shoveling snow, hauled pulpwood, provided taxi services locally, drove his own private activity bus (The Blue Cat), had an ice cream truck that he drove weekly throughout the community, and provided transportation to and from Burlington Industries and Russell Stover Candies Incorporation for many employees prior to his retirement from Burlington Industries. Drewry believed that a person was suppose to do all he could, while he could, and as long as he could. He will be remembered as a loving husband, father, brother, and friend who did the best that he could do for his family. During the final few years and days of his life, he would often repeat the words, “Lord Have Mercy.” He believed that nothing was impossible with God in his life. Drewry leaves to cherish his memories, a son, Larry Bacon (Joyce) of Clarksville, Virginia; three daughters, Anna Gayles (Anthony) of Chase City, Virginia, Betty Reid Duncan of Richmond, Virginia, and Helen Hill of Chase City, Virginia; nine grandchildren (Adrian, April, Ashley, Camecia, Daron, Keesya, LeRoy, Travis, and Yvonne); six great grandchildren (Angela, Cierra, Jacqueline, Jaden, Josh, and Tia); three sisters, Maggie Willicia Crutchfield and Geneva Lea of Chase City, Virginia and Irene Thompson of Hilliside, New Jersey; three brothers, Ellis Bacon (Isabelle) of Chase City, Virginia, Roger Bacon (Joyce) of Baltimore, Maryland, and Woodrow Bacon of Chase City, Virginia; two brothers-in-law, Joseph Woodton (Elnora) and Willie Reid of Baltimore, Maryland; two sisters-in-law, Patty Bacon of Chase City, Virginia and Bertha Reid of Baltimore, Maryland; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. Funeral Services for Mr. Drewry Thomas Bacon will be conducted 11:00 A.M. Saturday, December 7, 2019 at First Baptist Church, Wylliesburg, VA with Rev. Opie Terrell officiating. Burial will follow in Ivy Hill Cemetery, Chase City, VA. Public viewing for family and friends will be held on Friday from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
