Mrs. Hortense Williams Bouldin, 94 of Clarksville, Virginia entered eternal rest Friday, September 6, 2019 at Bon Secours Saint Marys Hospital, Richmond, VA. A native of Chase City, Virginia, Mrs. Bouldin proudly graduated from Thyne Institute in Chase City, Virginia in 1942 and then graduated from Virginia State University in 1947, remaining active as an alumnus for many years. Mrs. Bouldin started her teaching career in Mecklenburg County as a physical education teacher and soon became recognized for her mathematics acumen, forging her teaching career in Mathematics for over 42 years. Mrs. Bouldin supported her community as an Elder at Thyne Presbyterian Church in Chase City, Virginia and worked tirelessly in various roles until her health declined. Upon retirement she taught Adult Education at Southside Community College inspiring a new generation of students and parents. Mrs. Bouldin’s lasting legacy of service included her leadership and committee involvement in erecting a memorial for Thyne Institute in Chase City Virginia. The school became the first organized school for African Americans in Mecklenburg County, in operation until 1951. Mrs. Bouldin was preceded in death by her parents, James Henry and Rachel Hardy Williams and her husband, Cedric Wilson Bouldin. She is survived by four children: Gloria Bouldin, John Bouldin and Paula Bouldin all of Richmond Virginia and Rhonda Bouldin Gaines (Michael, Sr.) of Warwick, Pennsylvania; three grandchildren, Michael J. Gaines, Jr. (Rachel) of Houston Texas , Charles Cedric Gaines (Whitney) of Austin Texas, Elizabeth Naomi Lomax (James) of Fort Worth Texas; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Grace W. Russell of Upper Marlboro, Maryland; sister-in-law, Bettie W. Williams of Clarksville, Virginia, and a vast number of other loving relatives, caring friends and former students. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 AM Thursday, September 12, 2019 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, Virginia with Revs. Sylvester Bullock, Beverly Bullock and George Wilson conducting the service. Burial will follow in Bluestone Mission Cemetery, Clarksville, Virginia. The family will receive friends on Thursday morning from 10:00 AM until 10:45 AM. Arrangements are by Giles-Harris Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Chase City, VA.
