Michael James Brooks

Mr. Michael James “Hammer” Brooks, 56, of Columbus, Ohio, transitioned on May 22, 2026, after complications resulting from a car accident three years ago.

He was born on April 11, 1970, to the late Harold Lee Brooks Sr. and the late Lula Belle Brooks. He attended Charlotte County Public Schools and graduated from the Job Corps program in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in the late 1980s, where he resided for some time. He later moved to Columbus, Ohio, where he remained until his passing.

Michael had a heart of gold and never met a stranger. His love for the Pittsburgh Steelers was unmatched. He also loved spending time with his family and friends. His legacy lives on through his family and all the lives he touched. His family and close friends will miss him dearly.

He leaves to cherish his loving memory six children: Lakeshia Brooks of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Michael James Brooks Jr., Shanya Amashay Brooks, Tyler James Woodson-Levey, and Mekhia Domonique Brooks, all of Columbus, Ohio; four grandchildren; six siblings, Gwendolyn Denise Brooks of Roanoke, Virginia, Harold Lee Brooks Jr. and Larry Jerome Brooks of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Carol Agnes Brooks of Rural Hall, North Carolina, and Donald Lee Brooks and Susan Kimberly Brooks of Winston-Salem, North Carolina and a vast number of other loving relatives and caring friends.

A memorial service will be conducted 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 6, 2026 at the chapel of Giles-Harris Funeral Home, Chase City, VA with Rev. Phillip Staten, officiating.
